Before the Russian Revolution, the country was ruled by Tsar Nicholas II, a monarch with absolute power and a member of the Romanov family, that had ruled Russia since 1613. Unlike other European monarchies, Russia had no elections, and the throne passed from generation to generation within the Romanov dynasty.

The Civil War, which followed the Russian Revolution, had a devastating impact on the civilian population. It's estimated that as many as 10 million Russians may have died from violence, famine, or disease during this period. A Typhus epidemic, in particular, claimed a significant number of lives.
