  • When Isaac Newton was born, he was so tiny and feeble that no one expected him to survive for more than a few days. But his mother, Hannah, cared for her new son, and Isaac grew into a healthy baby and years later, one of the world's greatest-ever scientists.

  • Isaac Newton built the world's first reflecting telescope, which used mirrors instead of lenses. It magnified objects over forty times and produced far sharper images than was possible with other telescopes of the day.

  • In 1696, Isaac Newton was given a job at the Royal Mint in London, where England's gold and silver coins were made. Three years later, he became "Master of the Mint," in charge of the whole organization, and given an annual salary of £2,000.
