  • The Empire State Building's foundations are supported by bedrock 40 feet (12 meters) below the streets of New York City. This bedrock is known as the "Manhattan Schist" and was formed 450 million years ago.

  • The steel framework of the Empire State Building is held together by 100,000 steel rivets. The last rivet to be put in place is made, not from steel, but from solid gold! It was inserted ceremonially by Al Smith, one of the investors in the construction of the Empire State Building.

  • The Empire State Building held the title of the world's tallest building for more than 40 years, before being overtaken by the Twin Towers of New York City's World Trade Center.
