  • Following an attempted overthrow of the Cuban government in 1953, Fidel Castro was arrested and put on trial. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but was released after just two years. The decision to release him changed the course of Cuba's history, as it gave Castro another chance to overthrow the government.

  • In 1962, Fidel Castro was instrumental in bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war. He allowed the Soviet Union to build nuclear missile bases in Cuba, just 90 miles (145 km) from the United States. If the missiles were launched, they could reach America in minutes, and each one was powerful enough to destroy a city.
