Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5 1901, the fourth of Elias and Flora Disney's five children. His name was shortened to "Walt" by his nine-year-old brother, Roy.

When America entered World War One in April 1917, Walt Disney was eager to go to Europe to fight for his country. He was turned down by the army, but was recruited as an ambulance driver by the Red Cross. He sailed for France in October 1918.

Walt Disney came up with the idea of Mickey Mouse on a long train journey. He called his new cartoon character "Mortimer Mouse", but Walt's wife said it sounded too pompous and suggested "Mickey" instead.
