A few "Fascinating Facts About Volcanoes"..........

  • Half of the world's volcanoes are found in the "Ring of Fire" - a vast belt of volcanic activity that surrounds the Pacific Ocean.

  • When they erupt, volcanoes can send massive clouds of hot ash and gas up to 17 miles (30 km) into the air where they can spread out and cover the surface of the Earth. If there is enough ash in the air it can reflect the heat of the Sun back into space and cause the temperature at the planet's surface to fall.

  • Mauna Kea on the Pacific island of Hawaii measures 33,465 feet (10,200 m) from its base on the ocean floor to its peak. Measuring the height from the ocean floor -rather than sea level - would make it not just the world's tallest volcano, but the world's tallest mountain!
