A few "Fascinating Facts About The Wright Brothers"..........

  • The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, became fascinated by flight when they were boys. Early aircraft were gliders - machines without and engines over which the pilots had little control. The Wright Brothers decided to build an aircraft with an engine to control the flight. It would be the first true airplane.

  • Orville and Wilbur Wright's first airplane was called the Flyer and in December 1903 it flew for 12 seconds traveling a distance of 120 feet (35 m), the first time a powered airplane had flown through the air and landed safely under control of a pilot.

  • In 1969, Neil Armstrong was flying in Apollo 11 to become the first man to set foot on the Moon. He secretly took two pieces of the Flyer's propeller with him on his 250,000 mile (400,000 km) journey as a tribute to the Wright Brothers.
