  • The Statue of Liberty was built to withstand all types of weather. She gets struck by lightning around 100 times a year, and when a storm hits New York City she sways up to three inches (7.5 cm) side to side when winds reach 50 mph (80 kph).

  • The pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty stands is 89 feet (27 m) high and made of concrete and granite. More than 27,000 tons of concrete were used for the foundations and walls of the pedestal, and at the time it was the largest amount of concrete ever poured.

  • It was originally planned to have the Statue of Liberty finished by 1876, in time for the 1ooth birthday of the United States, but it was not until 10 years later that the statue was finally unveiled.
