The United States and the Soviet Union started the Space Race in the years following World War 2 and the first victory went to the Soviets. On October 4 1957 a Soviet rocket was launched carrying the first ever man-made satellite - "Sputnik 1" - into orbit around the Earth.

On February 20 1962, the United States successfully launched the first American into orbit. The astronaut, John Glenn, spent five hours in space, orbiting the Earth three times.

On June 6 1963, the Soviet cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, became the first woman in space, orbiting the Earth 48 times during her 70-hour mission. It was another 20 years before America sent a woman into space, when Sally Ride was part of the crew of the Space Shuttle "Challenger".
