  • The United States and the Soviet Union started the Space Race in the years following World War 2 and the first victory went to the Soviets. On October 4 1957 a Soviet rocket was launched carrying the first ever man-made satellite - "Sputnik 1" - into orbit around the Earth.

​

  • On February 20 1962, the United States successfully launched the first American into orbit. The astronaut, John Glenn, spent five hours in space, orbiting the Earth three times.

​

  • On June 6 1963, the Soviet cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, became the first woman in space, orbiting the Earth 48 times during her 70-hour mission. It was another 20 years before America sent a woman into space, when Sally Ride was part of the crew of the Space Shuttle "Challenger".
