  • In 17th century Europe and America, it was believed that witches were the servants of the Devil who had been given magical, supernatural powers that could be used to cause harm to people.

  • The first person to be put on trial at the Salem Witch Trials was sixty-year-old Bridget Bishop. She faced a panel of judges and forty members of a jury. She was not a popular member of the community, and several villagers were happy to testify against her and accuse her of being a witch. Her trial lasted eight days before she was found guilty of witchcraft and sentenced to death.

  • On January 22, 1953, the first performance of a new play by the American playwright, Arthur Miller, took place. The Crucible is based on the Salem Witch Trials, and although it is not historically accurate, it conveys the sense of panic and hysteria that spread through Salem as more and more people were accused of witchcraft.
