  • At 7.55 on the morning of December 7 1941, Japanese airplanes reached Pearl Harbor after flying from their aircraft carriers 200 miles (320 km) to the north. 15 minutes later three American ships had been hit, killing 1,500 American sailors.

​

  • The attack on Pearl Harbor lasted less than two hours. Nearly 2,400 Americans were killed and almost 1,200 wounded. 21 ships were sunk or damaged, and more than 300 American aircraft were put out of action.

​

  • The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, America entered World War Two by declaring war on Japan. Three days later the United States was also at war with Japan's European allies, Germany and Italy, and joined Britain and France in the fight to defeat Adolf Hitler.
