  • From a young age, Neil Armstrong had been fascinated by airplanes, and during the summer of 1946 he took flying lessons. On August 5, his birthday, he got the best present ever - his pilot's licence. He had learned to fly before he could drive a car!

​

  • In 1947 Neil joined the Navy where he learned to fly fighter planes. He came to be regarded as a skilful and talented pilot and was soon in action during the Korean War. When the war finished in 1953, he had flown 78 missions and returned home to America with numerous medals.

​

  • In the summer of 1953, Neil got a job as a test pilot. He flew all types of aircraft, but the most exciting was the X-15. It was rocket propelled and flew at nearly 4,000 mph (6,400 kph) reaching an altitude of 40 miles (65 km) - the very edge of space.
