  • Cassius Clay - later known as Muhammad Ali - grew up at a time of racial segregation in the southern United States, when there were laws that kept black people separate from whites. Cassius was deeply affected by the racism he and other black people experienced, and from an early age he thought it was wrong that people with different colored skin should be treated so badly.

​

  • After becoming Olympic champion in 1960, Muhammad Ali - then known as Cassius Clay - was so proud that he wore his gold medal for 48 hours, even wearing it in bed. In his autobiography, Ali writes that after being refused service in a restaurant back home in Louisville, he was so angry that he threw his medal in the Ohio River. This may or may not be true, he could have just lost it, but in 1996 he was awarded a replacement gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games.

  • Muhammad Ali was married four times and had nine children – seven daughters and two sons. His youngest daughter, Laila, who was born in 1977, followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a professional boxer. She won all 24 of her professional fights and became super middleweight world champion in 2002.
