  • Around 500,000 earthquakes take place around the world every year. 100,000 of these are strong enough for people to notice, and around 100 are powerful enough to cause damage.

​

  • When an earthquake happens under the sea, the violent movement of the seabed produces huge waves in the water above it. These waves spread out from the epicenter and travel through the ocean at speeds of up to 500 mph (800 kph), the speed of a jet airliner.

​

  • The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 lasted less than a minute, but caused massive damage. 25,000 buildings were destroyed, and burst gas pipes caused fires that spread across the city and lasted four days. Around 3,000 people lost their lives and 225,000 were left homeless.
