  • Although dolphins look like fish, they cannot breathe underwater. Like humans, they are mammals and use their lungs to breathe. They can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes by holding their breath.

  • With its sleek, streamlined shape and strong tail, a dolphin can swim very quickly - at speeds of up to 25 mph (40 kph) when it needs to. Dolphins normally swim at around 7 or 8 mph (11-13 kph).

  • Dolphins love to play, whatever age they are. They chase each other, ride on waves and love to leap out of the water, reaching heights of up to 20 feet (6 m) before falling back in.
