  • When a dog smells another dog or person, it doesn't just get a scent - it gets enough information to tell it all it needs about who or what it is sniffing. Dogs can tell if they are sniffing a male or a female, where they have been, what they have touched, what sort of mood they are in, and much, much more.

  • In 1859 the world's first dog show took place in the city of Newcastle, in the north-east of England. 60 dogs took part and the only breeds on show were Pointers and Setters.

  • The Basenji is the only dog that doesn't bark. Its voice box is a different shape from other dogs, which means it can only howl or make a yodeling sound.
