In the 15th century, some people still believed that the Earth was flat. For this reason, Christopher Columbus found it difficult to recruit a crew for the first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. It was thought that if you sailed too far, you would eventually fall off the edge of the world.

Between 1492 and 1504, Christopher Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic, hoping to find gold and treasure in the Indies. His ship on the first voyage - the Santa Maria - was wrecked off the coast of Hispaniola, after the cabin boy who was in control of the ship, fell asleep.

On his third voyage, Columbus arrived at present-day Trinidad, the most southerly of the Caribbean islands. He also became the first European to reach the continent of South America.
