A few "Fascinating Facts About Christopher Columbus"..........

  • In the 15th century, some people still believed that the Earth was flat. For this reason, Christopher Columbus found it difficult to recruit a crew for the first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. It was thought that if you sailed too far, you would eventually fall off the edge of the world.

  • Between 1492 and 1504, Christopher Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic, hoping to find gold and treasure in the Indies. His ship on the first voyage - the Santa Maria - was wrecked off the coast of Hispaniola, after the cabin boy who was in control of the ship, fell asleep.

  • On his third voyage, Columbus arrived at present-day Trinidad, the most southerly of the Caribbean islands. He also became the first European to reach the continent of South America.
