Ludwig van Beethoven showed a talent for music from an early age and he gave his first public performance at the age of seven, although his father claimed that his son was just six years old to make his musical skills seem all the more remarkable.

By his mid-twenties, Beethoven's fame was growing as he gave concerts and published his latest compositions. He seemed to have the world at his feet, but in 1798 - at the age of 28 - Beethoven realized that he was losing his hearing - a serious condition for anyone, but for a musician it was devastating.

The Austrian composer, Franz Schubert, helped to carry Beethoven's coffin at his funeral in 1827. Schubert died the next year and was buried in a grave next to Beethoven's.
