  • The Mission Commander of Apollo 13 was 42-year-old Jim Lovell. He was a former test pilot in the US Navy and joined NASA in 1963. Lovell was one of NASA's most experienced astronauts, having spent more than 600 hours in space.​

  • The launch of Apollo 13 took place shortly before 1:13 pm on Saturday April 11 1970 from NASA's launch complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

  • Five minutes into the Apollo 13 mission one of the engines cut out earlier than it should have. The Flight Director knew that every mission was likely to have a moment when a piece of equipment malfunctions, and he was relieved that Apollo 13's was over and done with so early.
