  • Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, in 1867. Her name at birth was Maria Salomea Sklodowska - she changed "Maria" to "Marie" years later when she went to live in France.

  • Marie Curie was one of only 25 female science students out of 1,825 when she attended the famous Sorbonne University in Paris, France. In the 19th century, science was dominated by men, and Marie Curie would be a trailblazer for all the female scientists who followed in her footsteps.

  • In 1911, Marie Curie became the first person ever to win two Nobel Prizes. She was also the first person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences - her first was for physics, and her second was for chemistry
