  • When he was elected in 1960, John F. Kennedy became America’s wealthiest ever president, a record he held until 2017 when Donald Trump took office. Kennedy didn’t need his presidential salary and so he donated it all to charity.

  • In 1959, the Caribbean island of Cuba was taken over by a group of rebel soldiers under the leadership of Fidel Castro, who became the country's president. Castro allowed Soviet nuclear missiles to be based in Cuba where they threatened the United States, just 90 miles away. This led to the "Cuban Missile Crisis" when the world was taken to the brink of nuclear war.

  • John F. Kennedy was keen on space exploration and in 1961 he pledged to send a man to the Moon before the end of the decade. Billions of dollars were given to NASA, the American space agency, to build rockets powerful enough to reach the Moon. In July 1969, Kennedy’s promise was fulfilled when Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon.
